How your score is counted

WPM
Every 5 characters in what you typed, spaces included, count as one word. Each mistake you leave in takes one word off, and the total is divided by the length of the test in minutes.
Raw WPM
The same count before mistakes are taken off.
Accuracy
The share of the letters and spaces you typed that were right. A mistake you fix with Backspace still counts against accuracy.
Mistakes
Each letter is checked against the letter in the same place in the word shown, so a skipped or doubled letter makes the letters after it wrong too. Letters past the end of the word are extra, and if a space ends the word early, the letters left off are missed. Each wrong, extra, or missed letter counts as one mistake, so typing "teh" for "the" is two mistakes. None carry into the next word.
The clock
Starts at your first letter and runs for the whole test, even if you stop typing or click away.
The words
Common English words from a list of 200, in mixed order, all lowercase, with no punctuation. Try again draws a new order.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

In a 2018 study of 168,960 people who took an online typing test on computer keyboards, the average was about 52 words per minute. The fastest tenth typed about 78 WPM or faster, and the slowest tenth about 26 WPM or slower. A 2019 study of 37,370 people typing on phones measured an average of about 36 WPM. Both studies counted every character typed, mistakes included, so compare them with your raw WPM. Both groups chose to take a typing test, so treat the numbers as a rough guide.

Why is my score different on another site?

Typing tests differ in how they count speed (only words typed without a mistake, every character typed as in your raw WPM, or one word off per mistake as this test does), whether a fixed mistake lowers accuracy, whether the clock pauses when you stop, and the kind of text. Compare scores from the same test.

Can I take the test on my phone?

Yes. Tap the words to open your keyboard. If your keyboard fixes a typo, the fixed word counts, but the typo still lowers your accuracy.

Is what I type saved or sent?

What you type is not saved or sent by the test. Completed scores, dates and test conditions are saved on this browser so you can compare attempts and keep personal bests. You can view or delete them below the test. Results do not sync and may be lost when browser data is cleared.
