How it works
Unicode, the character set behind every modern device, holds far more than one alphabet: bold and italic mathematical letters, script, fraktur, circled and squared characters, and many other lookalikes. The font-like styles swap each letter you type for its twin in one of those alphabets. The others build on your text instead, stacking marks over it, spacing it out, turning it around or framing it in symbols. Either way the result is ordinary text that any app can store and show.
Why some symbols show as boxes
An app can only draw a character if the device has a font that includes it. Most phones and browsers cover nearly everything on this page, but older devices and a few apps miss some ranges and show a box or question mark instead. If one style breaks where you paste it, try another one. Common styles like bold and italic travel best.
