Type Russian here on the standard ЙЦУКЕН layout with nothing to install, even if your keyboard shows only Latin letters (русская клавиатура).

Use your mouse or finger on the on-screen keys if you don't know where the Cyrillic letters live. On a computer, your own keyboard types Cyrillic through the standard Russian mapping; press Esc to switch that mapping on or off. On a phone or tablet, tap "Load Keyboard" and type on the screen without changing your device's keyboard. Backspace, Enter, and the space bar work the way you'd expect.
The ЙЦУКЕН layout
This is the same arrangement Russian speakers use on Windows: the top letter row starts й ц у к е н, the letter ё has its own key in the top-left corner, and the Shift number row carries Russian punctuation, including the numero sign №. The period sits on the last key of the bottom row, and Shift turns it into a comma.

Turn on the Transliteration switch above the keyboard and spell Russian words in Latin letters. A popup offers ranked Cyrillic spellings: choose one with the arrow keys and Space or Enter, or click it. It works word by word and the top suggestion is a best guess, so keep an eye on the result while you type.
Phonetic and legacy layouts
The layout menu holds eight alternatives. Russian_Qwerty and Russian Translit are phonetic layouts that put letters where their Latin sound sits (п on P, р on R), which many learners find faster than memorizing ЙЦУКЕН. There are also the pre-computer Typewriter arrangement, the Diktor and Mac variants, and Bashkir and Tatar keyboards for those languages. Do I need to install a Russian keyboard on Windows or Mac?
Not for this page. To add Russian system-wide: on Windows use Settings → Time & Language → Language; on macOS use System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources; on phones add Russian under keyboard settings.
Is this the layout Russian typewriters used?
Almost. Computers standardized a slightly different punctuation arrangement than typewriters used. If you learned to type on a typewriter, choose Russian (Typewriter) from the layout menu instead.
